The Obyggdasetur Islands-Wilderness Center came highly recommended from local folks in Egilsstadir and they were right. I was the only guest going horseback riding and while I didn’t stay at the hotel, I was given a tour of some of the rooms, which quickly convinced me that this would be a wonderful place to stay. The staff taught me how to choose and properly saddle my horse, Mauny. I rode with 3 of the center caretakers to an abandoned sheep farm where we toured the farmhouse and I learned about the rich history of the area. This was followed by 2 of us voluntarily climbing into a small, wooden cable car to experience a glacial river crossing and pull our way back again. Our horses were fed and well rested and we rode the trail back to the wilderness center. Safety was emphasized every step of the way; this trail ride was perfect from beginning to end.
I visited the Wilderness centre with my friends this spring, we had a guided tour around the area and a wonderful dinner. The tour was excellent even though the exhibition was not ready yet. Denni took us to the smoke house and gave us a taste of the smoked lamb, and he walked with us through the houses and the exhibition that was under construction. Then we had a coffee in the kitchen while Arna was making the dinner ready for us. They told us about the development of the centre and we were all impressed. We didn’t stay at the “hotel” but we had the opportunity to look at the rooms and they were excellent, clean and comfy. The atmosphere is adventurous and you get the feeling of travelling back in time. I recommend a visit there, it’s really worth it.
We had such an amazing time at the wilderness center during our trip around Iceland. The road to the place is beautiful and the place itself authentic and charming. Had a great dinner comfortable beds and great breakfast. Took the tour and a three hour horse back riding tour to an abandoned farm. The kids (and their parents) found it all perfect. Thanks!
We stayed 3 days at Wilderness Center and loved it. Surrounded by pure beauty, amazing horse rides in the wild and exquisite valley, lovely people, it was pure bliss. You are pretty much stuck there for all your meals, which are served family style in a lovely and quaint kitchen. The meals are not anything special, usually just soup and bread, so be prepared to bring your own snacks. Other than that, it was perfect, including excellent WIFI service.
