This tour offers a compelling mix of activity, history and great food in a traditional environment.
Experience magnificent nature, ride the friendly Icelandic horse, sleep in an authentic, renovated
farmhouse and feel your adrenaline flow while being hand-pulled across a glacial river in a cable
trolley. Visit the nearby highlands with their lakes, mountains, deep canyons and hot springs. Our
wilderness museum is an enjoyable, interactive experience both indoors and outdoors. The hike up
towards the waterfalls Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss is fairly easy as well as rewarding, with fabulous
views over the valley.

Day 1.
The tour starts by driving through mountain scenery along Lagarfljót lake, home to a famous underwater monster. Your local guide will tell you mystical stories of the lake.

At the Wilderness Center, you will be guided through the unique museum, designed by collaborating artists. Then we can enjoy a lunch of primarily local ingredients at the Center’s home-style kitchen.
A local guide will take you to an abandoned farm, with its picturesque stories and traces of the past.
Farther upstream, waterfalls drop in series from the highland plateau. The adventurous have a chance to cross the glacial river in a renovated, traditional cable trolley.
After light refreshments beside the Center’s cozy kitchen, you become introduced to the historically “most trusted servant” – the unique Icelandic horse – and take a pleasant ride along the valley. This
is something you have to experience at least once in your life!
For a pre-dinner appetizer, we visit a traditional food-smoking hut and can taste some local meat and learn about Icelandic food traditions through the centuries.
Experience a wilderness dinner with ingredients from the highlands, prepared by local residents in the open, cozy kitchen.
In the evening we relax in the local hot-spring and authentic spa at the Center.

Day 2.
We start the day with breakfast, then scout for reindeer and stop for photos as we drive onto the highland plateau around Snæfell mountain. At the magnificent Hafrahvammagljúfur canyon, we enjoy our packed lunch, then bathe in the natural hot springs by Laugarfell mountain.
Heading once more for the valley, Hengifoss waterfall is our last destination. One of Iceland’s highest waterfalls, it drops 128 meters off the plateau into a magnificent gorge. The high, colorful cliffs around it display lava layers from volcanic eruptions in the Tertiary Period, during which Iceland rose from the sea. It takes 40-60 minutes to walk from the parking lot to our vantage point below the waterfall. On the way, we might also fall in love with the photogenic Litlanesfoss waterfall, framed by exceptionally long, graceful basalt columns.
Finally, the guides get you safely back to the town of Egilsstaðir. There you can look around town and grab a bite if you wish before flying back to Reykjavik.
